Clean Your Case

A pillowcase is essential for keeping your pillow clean. Although many buckwheat pillows are made of durable, soft cotton for their inner cases, it is important to add an additional layer of protection.

Now let’s get to the cleaning!

Step 1You should never put your whole pillow in the washer. Otherwise, you will most likely have to replace it. The hulls will crack if they get wet and then break down after drying. This can cause them to lose their ability to mold to your head.

Step 2Place your pillow upright and vertically so that the zipper can be reached up high. Give your pillow a good shake to get all the hulls down towards the bottom with gravity.

Step 3Take the zipper apart and remove the hulls. You can either scoop them out with a spoon or pour them into a sturdy container such as a paper grocery bag. You need to get all the hulls out of the case.

Step 4You can wash the case in a washer. Use cold water and wash it on a normal cycle. The inner casing can be washed in cold water by hand. Use mild laundry detergent.

Step 5:Hang the case out of the washer and dryer to dry. The case may shrink or lose some of it’s durability if you dry it in the dryer.

What About The Buckwheat?

Perhaps you are curious about the hulls.

They are less susceptible to stains and smells than the pillowcases, so you can simply pour the hulls into the clean case.

However, if liquid spills onto the pillow or the buckwheat becomes wet, the hulls can be laid out to dry. You should remove the hulls from the pillow case as soon as possible. If they get wet, you may need to throw them out. Be careful not to get them dirty! We recommend placing the wet buckwheat shells in a large container. To ensure that all hulls are getting a fair share of the sun, stir the hulls about periodically.

Pillow hulls made from Buckwheat

The hulls will eventually begin to break down over time and your head may start to feel a little more shaped. You can order replacement hulls online if your pillow is losing its power.

That’s it! Although it might seem like an extra step to keep your pillow clean, it will be well worth it. You won’t need to replace your buckwheat pillows for very long if you take care of it properly.
